Jack O'Connell
Visits San Miguel

Jack O'Connell previews book by Mrs. Metzgar - photo courtesy of Mary Strobridge
Jack O'Connell, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, visited Lillian Larsen School in San Miguel on Tuesday, May 27.  He is pictured above holding the "Monarch's Call" book written by teacher, Peggy Metzgar.
Superintendent O'Connell came to meet and talk with the students and staff.  He is very concerned about the State budget cuts affecting the programs and resources that students need to be successful.  The class size reduction bill was originally written by him and he would like to see it be expanded rather than reduced.
Superintendent O'Connell had an opportunity to take a short tour of the campus, including the gym.  He was very impressed by the school site.
S
uperintendent O'Connell was accompanied on his visit by Mary Strobridge of the San Miguel Teachers Association/CTA State Council, Gayle Bilek from the Templeton Teachers Association/CTA State Council as well as his assistant and security personnel. - submitted by Mary Strobridge

Saving the Irreplaceable

Scaffolding around Mission San Miguel
Mission photos courtesy of Don LaValle
At long last Mission San Miguel is showing visible signs of progress on the church sanctuary! Scaffolding went up around the 40 foot high building that has been closed since the earthquake in late 2003. Workers have removed the exterior white plaster to start the repair process to the adobe walls.
The renovated gift shop welcomes visitors to see a posted story board of photos showing the restoration progress. The gift shop includes a wonderful selection of books, collectibles, music and gifts that benefit the Mission. See hours of operation by visiting the Churches page.

Artwork inside Mission San Miguel waits for preservation work
An analysis of the interior artwork was done in March finding that all of the pigments for the murals are iron based and not plant pigments. The colors are in very good condition. Three bullet holes were found in the church wall with one actual bullet still embedded in the adobe, proving the church has had a colorful history!
Roughly three million dollars still must be raised to finish the restoration at Mission San Miguel per project manager John Fowler. A concerted effort by numerous groups continues to work diligently to find the funding.

Outstanding Citizen Award

Steve Kalar gets the Outstanding Citizen Award
Pictured L to R is Steve Kalar, Meg Brooks and Ann Granados
Steve Kalar was awarded the "Outstanding Citizen" Award by the San Miguel Teachers Association. The awards dinner was held at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Steve was recognized for his tireless work for the community of San Miguel, and more specifically, the students in the San Miguel Joint Union School District.

Steve spends time living and painting in both Italy and in San Miguel as a renowned artist. Some of  his artwork is on display in the Museum of the House of Dante.  As you might imagine, Steve is an incredibly busy man.  Besides his art, Steve lectures in European Universities, specializing in Renaissance art.
When Steve is here at home in San Miguel he makes time to be the chairman of  The San Miguel Resource Connection, and The Masters at Their Trade program. Though these two organizations, Steve gives back to his community.  Through his efforts and organization, students experience “the Arts” above and beyond the classroom instruction.  Students participate in piano keyboarding, choral music- “The Melodies,"  and a beginning and advanced ASL (American Sign Language) class called “Cantemanos” or the singing hands.  Students also have instruction in guitars and drums, and poetry writing. - submitted by Ann Granados
