San Miguel Teacher Honored

Eileen Rogers was honored at the October San Miguel School Board meeting with a special dedication of the new trophy case in her name. The San Miguel Lions presented Mrs. Rogers with a brass plaque engraved with her name to be installed on the case. Eileen Rogers has been a dedicated teacher, Athletic Director and coach at Lillian Larsen school for nearly thirty years. She organizes the annual Buzz Marathon and actively fund raises to keep and enhance sports programs at the school. Athletic programs at the school include; cross country, track and field, flag football, volleyball, basketball and golf. Eileen was once a contender for the U.S. Olympic track team as a young teen. She has a keen interest and knowledge of sports medicine. Mrs. Rogers is a strong advocate of asset building and continues to be a strong role model and inspiration to the many students who have been under her caring instruction.
Brad Forde of Butthead Builders recently finished building the two new award and trophy cases for Lillian Larsen School. The cases are installed in the foyer of the Don Wolf Recreation Center and filled with past sports trophies. North County Glass donated the glass and Brad donated his labor, lumber and brackets to build the cases.
The project was organized by parent Susan Moore and physical education teacher Eileen Rogers. San Miguel teacher Jill Heilmann held a school art contest to create the backdrop to the handsome new case. Matthew Roberson won the contest with his drawing of a hornet, the school mascot, and also did the final painting with help from Mrs. Heilmann and friends.
Walk to School Day
Gets Large Turnout
Camp Roberts personnel and parents meet with children to walk to school.

Vanessa Adame, a main organizer of Walk to School Day, was very pleased with the first time event. She said, "Your community in San Miguel is truly one of a kind and I know that the efforts you make for the kids there will not return void. They are very, very lucky to have people that support them and care for their well-being. We had such a great turnout! I heard from the YMCA director that we have had the highest percentage of participants so far throughout the county! 70% of the school participated (297 out of 425 students)! Definitely pat yourselves on the back for a job well done!"
Read full details in the following newspapers: Paso Robles Press and The Tribune.
Volunteers that helped to organize the event were from: the San Miguel Resource Connection, Public Health Department, HEAL-SLO, San Miguel Fire Department, Heritage Oaks Bank, San Miguel PTO, and faculty/the principal from Lillian Larsen Elementary. Army members from Camp Roberts and Volunteer Firefighters also walked with the kids. Thanks go to our generous contributors: The SLO County Community Foundation, HEAL-SLO, Lillian Larsen School, San Miguel Resource Connection, SLO Public Health Department, Walmart, Food4Less, Spencers, Trader Joes, Target, Sears and Lillian Larsen PTO.
Pleasant Valley School
Turns 100 Years Old!
Photos from the 100th birthday celebration at Pleasant Valley School
Current students, parents, former teachers, alumni and supporters celebrated the old Pleasant Valley one-room school's 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 12th. Though no longer in use, the original one-room schoolhouse still stands just across the road from the modern school building. The Pleasant Valley Community Foundation is currently raising money to restore the historic schoolhouse and held a raffle to raise money for their cause at the event. More than 80 visitors attended the soiree enjoying food prepared by the PVCF committee and volunteers from the San Miguel Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West. Ice cream was donated by Hospitality Catering and the birthday cake by Debra Compton. For more information about PVCF, call Susan at 805 441-1243.
