Trophies on Display!

Photo of new trophy cases
Brad Forde of Butthead Builders recently finished building two new award and trophy cases for Lillian Larsen School. The cases are installed in the foyer of the Don Wolf Recreation Center and ready to be filled with past sports trophies. North County Glass donated the glass and Brad donated his labor, lumber and brackets to build the cases.
The project was organized by parent Susan Moore and physical education teacher Eileen Rogers. San Miguel teacher Jill Heilmann held a school art contest to create the backdrop to the handsome new case. Matthew Roberson won the contest with his drawing of a hornet, the school mascot, and also did the final painting with help from Mrs. Heilmann and friends. The trophy case can be seen at Back to School night on September 18th.
Butthead Builders is a general building contractor specializing in custom cabinetry and house remodeling. Brad stated he built the cases for the students to have a nice place to display and be proud of their awards. He felt it was something nice he could do for the community.

New Portrait of
Corporal Roberts Unveiled

Corporal Roberts new portrait with artist
Gary McMaster shakes hands with artist Dean Gleisberg
Gary McMaster, Director and Curator of the Camp Roberts Historical Museum wrote an account of the unveiling ceremony for the new portrait of Colonel Roberts:
Camp Roberts staff members, several uniformed soldiers, several museum foundation members, as well as the museum volunteers were in attendance. Everyone was given a special event program and a flyer on the life of Cpl. Roberts with the event starting at noon.
The artist, Dean Gleisberg, drove down with his wife from their home near Sacramento.  I gave a talk on the life of Corporal Roberts and the research that I had done to enable me to write and publish his biography. Vice Chairman Dirk Hale added some additional comments on Roberts' life and Dean gave a talk on how much it meant for him to be selected to paint the portrait of our hero and how he went about it.  Then I took down the old painting of Cpl. Roberts which I had hung over the new one.  You could hear the crowd's amazement when they saw Cpl. Roberts' new image revealed, as it was like night and day from the old painting.
After the unveiling, we invited everyone to visit the museum kitchen at their leisure, as we furnished a complimentary lunch for everyone who was at the museum that day.

Arlin Weinberger pictured with a museum exhibit to honor Caspar Weinberger
Arlin Weinberger attended the museum event in honor of her father, Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Defense under President Reagan. He was one of the first trainees at Camp Roberts in early 1941.  This was her first opportunity to see our exhibit on her father with items donated by the family.  She also toured the historic Soldiers Bowl amphitheater and had her photo taken in front of it by the sign which dedicates it to her father.  Ms. Weinberger was very pleased with our exhibit about her father. - submitted by Gary McMaster

Old Timers Celebrated

Rotating photos of picnic in the San Miguel Park
Photos of Old Timers Picnic in San Miguel
The annual Old Timers Picnic was held August 24th in the San Miguel Community Park. The Lions Clubs from San Miguel, Shandon, Orcutt and Santa Margarita served up chicken cooked over oak wood in the BBQ pits, beans, salad, french bread and dessert. Eighty people over 80 years old were fed for free as official "old timers."
The Pioneer Day royal court was presented honoring Wayne Harris as King and Eleanor Heaton Sachs as Queen. Ella Adams was honored with a special gift as the oldest to attend at a spry 102 years old!
The traditional picnic was started by local civic groups in the 1950s with the Lions Club taking on the hosting of the event in the late 1970s. The local Lions planted trees and built the shaded picnic area and BBQ pits at the park. The San Miguel Lions raise funds to provide free swimming and swimming lessons to local children as well wonderful programs such as the radio transmitter wrist bands for people with Alzheimers. The San Miguel Lions meet the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursdays of each month at 7 pm at their Community Center next to the San Miguel Library and welcome new members!

Award Winners from San Miguel

Prevention Alliance awards student
Steve Kalar with award winner Tyler Issacs from Lillian Larsen School.
The SLO County Prevention Alliance rolled out the red carpet at the Inn at Morro Bay for their 10th annual awards ceremony on August 21st to honor the work of local youth coalitions. Shirley Hamblin and Tyler Issacs from San Miguel were the award winners representing Masters At Their Trade, a youth arts program of the San Miguel Resource Connection.
Prevention Alliance has been a tremendous asset and inspiration for creating healthier communities for SLO County children. Prevention Alliance was funded ten years ago for drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Since then, they have helped to form Youth Coalitions or Task Forces in every community throughout the county. Funding ends December 2008.
It is tragic that without funding such inspiration could disappear.
Tyler Issacs - Youth Volunteer of the Year, is our inspired student and most improved citizen of our San Miguel School District. This year, Tyler inspired a group of guitar hopefuls to meet weekly to communicate and share their music skills. A shining example of our Masters at Their Trade programs, Tyler shared his talents and information and inspired others to do the same. We wish him continued expansion of his talents and the courage to share his gift with the world around him.
Shirley Hamblin - Adult Volunteer of the Year, has been paying it forward for many years at the San Miguel School District. She is our after school program's LEAP director. She is an inspiration to the youth of our town, their parents and our entire community. We greatly appreciate her dedication to our community, our San Miguel Resource Connection Board and our Masters at their Trade committee. We honor our friend, our teacher and our community member who makes a difference everyday in our lives.
