Yard Sale Fundraiser

A big Yard Sale will be held Saturday, August 15th on 13th St. across from the San Miguel Library from 8 am to 3 pm. The sale is a fundraiser for the Native Daughters of the Golden West. Lots of great recyled treasures will be offered as well as raffle tickets for a "Quail Family" painting by D. Nicholson Miller.

Proceeds will support the local Parlor and State wide projects of the NDGW; Childrens Foundation, Mission Restoration, Veterans Welfare, and Native Daughter Home in San Francisco.

Crime Stoppers

Downtown San Miguel has experienced a recent rash of vandalism, especially to vacant buildings. Residents and business owners are encouraged to be on alert and report suspicious activity to drive out vandals.
San Luis Obispo's Crime Stoppers is a county-wide, non-profit, community program that unites the public, the media, and law enforcement in the fight against crime. The program offers anonymity and cash rewards to citizens who furnish information leading to the arrest and indictment of felony crime offenders. Anonymity overcomes fear of involvement. Cash overcomes penalty.

Happy 60th Birthday San Miguel Lions Club!

The San Miguel Lions celebrated their 60th birthday on Saturday, August 8th! Members started the celebration on Friday at the Wolf Family Ranch in San Miguel. Thirty-six other Lions Clubs from around the state came together for a BBQ and to install their new Governor at the Rios-Caledonia Adobe in honor of this special birthday.
The San Miguel Lions Club was founded in 1949. The all volunteer group has worked through the years to provide numerous programs including; community free swimming, the Old Timers BBQ, NRA Hunter Safety, The Great AGventure Day, White Cane Days, Red Cross Swimming Lessons, student eye screening, Project Lifesaver transmitter bracelets, and much more!

School Garden Gets Help

Several volunteers from in and around San Miguel worked to prepare the garden area at Lillian Larsen School the last weekend in July.
Christina Wilkinson is an ag teacher as well as the Soils to Succulent Flavors class instructor for the San Miguel Resource Connection's Healthy Eating Active Living Grant (HEAL-SLO). Students raise their own herbs and vegetables and learn ways to prepare, preserve and cook them.
HEAL SLO is working to change policy and mind sets that lead to unhealthy food and drink choices causing obesity, diabetes, and diseases related to being overweight. The economic impact of obesity in California has nearly doubled in the last six years costing an estimated $41 billion a year, per a report by the California Center for Public Health Advocacy. Ms. Wilkinson was pleased with the progress and appreciative of the helping hands to level the garden space, put together planter boxes, spread compost, dig out spaces around edge of garden to place edging, and install the drip system. Thank you to everyone who worked to make the school garden possible!

4-H Club Donates
to Rescue Horses

4-H club makes donation

4-H Club presents donation to Diane Odell at Morning Star Youth Ranch

The Templeton 4-H Club used their two donated Pygora goats to make products to sell to raise funds to give to local charities. The 4-Hers used the goat fleece to make cat toys and milled soap from their goat's milk.
Morning Star Youth Ranch was given a $50 check plus a supply of their natural soap product. The 4-H members enjoyed a tour of the ranch and met the rescued horses that their funds will go to support.
Morning Star rescues horses and pairs them with local children through a one-on-one mentoring program. For more information about Morning Star Youth Ranch please visit their website.

The Native Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor held their Installation Ceremony at the San Miguel Senior Center on July 9th. The new President is Babette Smith, replacing Judi Thacker. The officers to serve a one year term are: First Vice, Lillie Merrit; Second Vice, Kathy Shuder (not pictured); Third Vice, Melissa Tyson; Organist, Doris Shaffer; Financial Secretary, Barbara Bruce; Treasurer, Judi Thacker; Recording Secretary, Jean Hoffmann; Marshal, Patsy Rambo; Inside Sentinel, Jani Meyers; Outside Sentinel, Carol Stacy (not pictured); Trustees, Dixie Thacker, Corma Graf, and Patricia McHarris; and Deputy, Doris Shaffer. Barbara Rowland will serve as the Grand President for the state of California in 2011.
The NDGW works to preserve California Missions, lighthouses the installation of historical landmark markers, award scholarships, as well as providing medical expenses through their Children's Foundation.
