Buzz Marathon at Camp Roberts

Buzz Marathon

Saturday, February 21st is the 9th anniversary of this meditative run through the hills and meadows of Camp Roberts Army National Guard Reservation in north San Luis Obispo County along the fertile Salinas River Valley. Marathon and half marathon to begin at 8:30 AM, 6:30 for walkers, 8:45 for 5k.
Starting at 750′ above sea level the course goes out and back rising to 1250′; most of the climb between miles 4 and 6. It is quiet and serene with wildlife spectators, sheep, spectacular views, training and research sites, aid stations every 2 miles and porta potties every 3 miles.
Runners come from across the country to compete with participants registered from nine states per early registration stats.
Get your entry form and complete details at the Buzz Marathon website. The earlier runners register the less the entry fee.
Volunteers are most welcome to help with the aid stations and tracking running times. Donations are gladly accepted for snacks and prizes for the participants.
Revenue from Buzz Marathon helps fund the athletic programs at Lillian Larsen Elementary School of Kindergarten to 8th grade students. Larsen features cross country and track and field for all children, then flag football, volleyball, basketball, and golf for the middle schoolers grades 6 to 8.
The Buzz Marathon is an Active and Healthy Lifestyle promotion fundraiser for the athletic program at Lillian Larsen School in San Miguel. This is a low income rural school district and funds are used to cover entry fees, uniforms, referees, equipment, field and course markings, physicals, and when possible scholarships to summer camps for high school bound students.

Funds Needed to Display
Art Mural in San Miguel

Kalar art work of cowboy characters and cows
Kow Party mural by Steve Kalar
World renowned artist, Steve Kalar, has created a mural depicting the history of the cattle industry in San Miguel. Steve has incorporated cowboy cartoon caricatures drawn by his late father into the art piece to be mounted on the San Miguel Flouring Mill. Steve is a 4th generation San Miguel resident.
The artwork has been named, "Kow Party" and is awaiting funds to be raised to cover the $1,000 cost of installing the 16' x 14' outdoor canvas. The artwork is being donated to the "San Miguel Masters in Artful Places" community arts program which is administered by the San Miguel Resource Connection.
The artwork is offered for sale as note cards in 4 designs, each representing a section of the mural. The sales generated from the note cards will go directly to pay for the printing and mounting of the new mural. To support this project, please purchase the note cards directly from Kalar & Kalar Productions, (see their ad on this page). Retailers in San Miguel are encouraged to arrange selling the cards in their local businesses. Call 805-467-3429 to sell or buy the note cards priced at $4.00 each.

Mission Parish Hall
Breaks Ground

Model of new parish hall
Model of new Mission Parish Hall and Community Center
Construction is currently underway for the new Parish Hall for Mission San Miguel.  Parishioners and local residents have been raising funds for over 10 years to build the much needed community center in the empty field that sits between the Mission and Highway 101.
During World War II, the land was home to the USO Building that served soldiers at Camp Roberts. After the war the land was set to be auctioned off by the U.S. government. The Mission friars purchased the land and used the USO Building as a Parish Hall. The aging building was later condemned and torn down, leaving the Parish and friars without a meeting hall. The Franciscan Friars Province of Santa Barbara, who saved the land from auction, donated the parcel of land back to Mission San Miguel. Brother Bill Short stated at the ceremony, "We are very pleased that the friars can make a contribution of this land for the purpose of building a parish hall, restoring it to a purpose it enjoyed for many years in the past."
Work has also started on the eagerly awaited retrofit work on the Mission's main sanctuary which has been closed since the December 2003 earthquake. Read more details about the story at the Paso Robles Press.

Drainage Construction Update 12/08
Update on the storm drain project in San Miguel:
The County is concluding a phase of the work with Papich Construction installing the pipe from the Salinas River to "N" Street along with three manholes and three drop inlets (allowing for surface runoff along the edge of the road to enter into the pipe rather than stand in puddles until it evaporated). Unfortunately the resurfacing of River Road will be limited to the area directly over the pipe.
The County entered in to a $250,000 contract with fiber optic companies to raise their lines adjacent to the railroad tracks on River Road between Mission Street and "N" Street to allow the County to enter in to the next phase of culvert work which is the boring of 300 feet of concrete pipe under the railroad tracks once money can be appropriated. The road closure necessary for the work resulted in a dramatic drop in revenue for the Deli on the corner.
Once that phase is complete the culvert will be extended across Mission Street and up 14th Street to the alley. In conjunction with the work 14th Street will be reconstructed and the horrible dip in the road at Mission Street will be eliminated.
