Military personnel from San Miguel and Camp Roberts visit Discover San Miguel to get news from home. One such soldier contacted us to thank us for our website and sent us news of his service on the other side of the world.
Major Charles Jarvis stated, "I work here mentoring the Afghan National Army (ANA). If you would have told me a year ago I would be fighting along side the ANA as they fight for a secure Afghanistan I would have given you a "Are you crazy" response. But now I am proud to say that I have fought along side my Afghan brothers and their fight for a secure country".

Major Jarvis is pictured above with his ANA leadership in a flight to another Forward Operating Base (FOB) to see how a US Brigade Support Battalion operates.
The Roughriders serve with the Embedded Transition Team 5th Kandak, 1st Brigade, 203rd ANA Corps at Camp Clark in Afghanistan.
Jarvis reminded us of the importance of support from home as he stated, "Please pray for the safety of all US forces all around the world who are away from loved ones and fighting along side America's sons and daughters."

The Native Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor held their Installation Ceremony at the San Miguel Senior Center on July 9th. The new President is Babette Smith, replacing Judi Thacker. The officers to serve a one year term are: First Vice, Lillie Merrit; Second Vice, Kathy Shuder (not pictured); Third Vice, Melissa Tyson; Organist, Doris Shaffer; Financial Secretary, Barbara Bruce; Treasurer, Judi Thacker; Recording Secretary, Jean Hoffmann; Marshal, Patsy Rambo; Inside Sentinel, Jani Meyers; Outside Sentinel, Carol Stacy (not pictured); Trustees, Dixie Thacker, Corma Graf, and Patricia McHarris; and Deputy, Doris Shaffer. Barbara Rowland will serve as the Grand President for the state of California in 2011.
The NDGW works to preserve California Missions, lighthouses the installation of historical landmark markers, award scholarships, as well as providing medical expenses through their Children's Foundation. July 4th Celebration

Families came to celebrate Independence Day at the San Miguel Library and Community Center to enjoy food, drinks, vendor booths, and fun from 3 pm to dusk.
The Native Sons of the Golden West hosted a BBQ with delicious tri-tip sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs. The Native Daughters of the Golden West sold a variety of desserts.
The Veterans Honor Guard and San Miguel Volunteer Fire Dept. provided a brief ceremony to honor our military and our nation’s birthday.
Fireworks were on sale at designated booths in town by the San Miguel Lions with the Native Sons of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor, and San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters.
The Country Farm & Craft Market provided vendors and gave a special donation to the San Miguel Library in support of the event. Special thanks go to the San Miguel Lions Club for use of the Community Center!

The July 4th event was hosted by the Friends of the San Miguel Library. The San Miguel Library was open special hours for residents to purchase used books as well as to peruse the library’s selection of books, books on tape, DVDs, and magazines.
The Native Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor presented the San Miguel Library with a California Flag to display at the Library. The flag was presented to Librarian, Judy Brown by both the current President, Judy Thacker and President-elect, Babette Smith.
Kids from newborn to 18 years of age are invited to join the Summer Reading Program at the San Miguel Library. Prizes for reading include a book bag, a new book of your choice, gift cards to local restaurants, and admission tickets to the Children's Museum in either Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo. Participants must read 10 books or 20 books with a friend, or a parent reading to a child.
The San Miguel Library is open every Tues, Wed, and Thurs. from 11 am to 4 pm. A U.S.A. flag will be posted on the library sign on 13th street to alert residents that the library is open. For more information please contact the library at 805-467-3224 or visit the Librarian's blog.

Health Clinic Opens

The Community Health Center opens June 22nd in San Miguel at Casa San Miguel located downtown on Mission Street. The health clinic will also be home to the San Miguel Community Support Center that has been operating out of a van parked at Lillian Larsen School. The location at the Casa is temporary for at least six months until both groups will have a permanent location next to the new Community Center being built by Mission San Miguel.

Casa San Miguel is renovated and open to residents

The new Community Health Clinic is open 9 am to 5 pm on Mondays, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
CHC is a non-profit serving local residents to provide quality and affordable healthcare services. The health clinic offers exams, immunizations, and prevention programs. For more information please visit their website or call Ariston at 805-934-5467.

The San Miguel Lions have worked with community support to provide free swimming for San Miguel kids through Fish Fry dinners and generous donations.
The pool is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Swimming lessons (group and private) will be offered starting July 14th. The pool can be rented for private swim parties.
