Sharing Books with Children
Children enjoy their book bags at the San Miguel Library
Raising a Reader is a program funded by SLO Community Foundation and the Orfalea Foundation. It is national proven early literacy program that engages parents in "book sharing" with children young children. We implemented the program this year in the two state preschool programs at Lillian Larsen.
The children checked out Red book bags containing professionally selected books (4) to take home for the week. There was also a DVD in the bag that gave the parents tips on "sharing" the books with their children.
On Thursday at the library the children who are entering Kindergarten in the fall received completion certificates and their own blue book bags to carry books checked out from the library. Many of the children also received their own library cards.
The celebration ended with ice cream in the park! SLO Community Foundation paid for the American Classic Ice Cream truck to come.

The Native Daughters of the Golden West, San Miguel Parlor, hosted the "What's In Your Garden" Tea and Fashion Show fundraiser on May 30th at the Paso Robles Country Club.
Tea table hosts each decorated their special table with beautiful tea sets and garden themed items.
Fashions were provided by the Queen's Closet of Morro Bay with the narration of the beautiful outfits by store owner, Pam Woodruff. Fashions were modeled by Jani Meyers, Kay Mumford (both from San Miguel) and Sigrid Castenadis, from Cambria.
Nearly 80 ladies attended the special tea to raise funds for the Native Daughters of the Golden West, who work to preserve California's missions, lighthouses, history and landmarks. Two San Miguel Parlor members are running for election as state officers to the Native Daughters of the Golden West; Barabara Rowland for Grand Vice-President, and Jean Hoffmann for Grand Secretary. Poly Students Renovate
Family Home
Cal Poly students worked in triple digit heat to renovate a home for the Larry Rueck family in San Miguel. The Rueck's left their home for a few weeks while Cal Poly students labored to improve the comfort, safety and handicap accessibility of their home, as part of the Poly House program. On Sunday, May 17th, the students gathered to "unveil" the renovated house to the Rueck family.
Larry and his wife are long-time residents of San Miguel, who care for their handicapped granddaughter. Their granddaughter was born with a heart defect and had 3 heart surgeries before the age of 3. Larry is a San Miguel Volunteer Firefighter and owns the Rueck Pump & Repair business downtown. Mr. and Mrs. Rueck have opened their home and hearts caring for over 20 foster children through the years.
The challenge for the students was to plan and schedule the work and resources to assure that the entire project could be completed in only four days (2nd and 3rd weekends in May) before the school quarter ends. The class receives no funding with which to perform the work for this project and depends entirely upon the generosity of businesses and individuals in the community. Thanks go to the donors who made the project possible!
Students were under the direction of Associate Professor, Roya Javadpour, Ph.D. from the Industrial & Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
Welcome to San Miguel!

The San Miguel Community Services District is making good use of the new banner poles in the downtown area installed by SLO County Public Works. The CSD will rotate different message banners and they welcome local civic groups to advertise their own special events to be hoisted over Mission Street.
The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters raise the overhead banners for a small fee to help cover the cost of the special equipment required for hoisting the signs.
For more information contact the CSD office at 805-467-3388.
