Funds Needed to Display
Art Mural in San Miguel

Kalar art work of cowboy characters and cows
Kow Party mural by Steve Kalar
World renowned artist, Steve Kalar, has created a mural depicting the history of the cattle industry in San Miguel. Steve has incorporated cowboy cartoon caricatures drawn by his late father into the art piece to be mounted on the San Miguel Flouring Mill. Steve is a 4th generation San Miguel resident.
The artwork has been named, "Kow Party" and is awaiting funds to be raised to cover the $1,000 cost of installing the 16' x 14' outdoor canvas. The artwork is being donated to the "San Miguel Masters in Artful Places" community arts program which is administered by the San Miguel Resource Connection.
The artwork is offered for sale as note cards in 4 designs, each representing a section of the mural. The sales generated from the note cards will go directly to pay for the printing and mounting of the new mural. To support this project, please purchase the note cards directly from Kalar & Kalar Productions, (see their ad on this page). Retailers in San Miguel are encouraged to arrange selling the cards in their local businesses. Call 805-467-3429 to sell or buy the note cards priced at $4.00 each.

Mission Parish Hall
Breaks Ground

Model of new parish hall
Model of new Mission Parish Hall and Community Center
Construction is currently underway for the new Parish Hall for Mission San Miguel.  Parishioners and local residents have been raising funds for over 10 years to build the much needed community center in the empty field that sits between the Mission and Highway 101.
During World War II, the land was home to the USO Building that served soldiers at Camp Roberts. After the war the land was set to be auctioned off by the U.S. government. The Mission friars purchased the land and used the USO Building as a Parish Hall. The aging building was later condemned and torn down, leaving the Parish and friars without a meeting hall. The Franciscan Friars Province of Santa Barbara, who saved the land from auction, donated the parcel of land back to Mission San Miguel. Brother Bill Short stated at the ceremony, "We are very pleased that the friars can make a contribution of this land for the purpose of building a parish hall, restoring it to a purpose it enjoyed for many years in the past."
Work has also started on the eagerly awaited retrofit work on the Mission's main sanctuary which has been closed since the December 2003 earthquake. Read more details about the story at the Paso Robles Press.
