Welcome to San Miguel!

The San Miguel Community Services District is making good use of the new banner poles in the downtown area installed by SLO County Public Works. The CSD will rotate different message banners and they welcome local civic groups to advertise their own special events to be hoisted over Mission Street.
The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters raise the overhead banners for a small fee to help cover the cost of the special equipment required for hoisting the signs.
For more information contact the CSD office at 805-467-3388.

Sagebrush Days Parade

The Sagebrush Days parade committee would like to thank the Friends of the San Miguel Library, the San Miguel Parlor Native Sons of the Golden West, the San Miguel Fire Dept., the San Miguel Resource Connection, and the San Miguel CSD for their support  of the 21st Annual Sagebrush Days Parade! Parade entries included fire engines, military vehicles, classic cars, horses and antique equipment. The Estrella Warbirds opened the parade with a flyover! Donations to the Estrella Warbird Museum in appreciation of the historic planes will be gladly accepted by the San Miguel Volunteer Fire Dept.
The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters hosted a fundraising BBQ in front of the fire station after the parade.

Thank You

The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters wear many hats in San Miguel! They recently held a Babysitter Training class for San Miguel students, teaching them CPR and 1st Aid. Thirteen local kids graduated from the 4 hour course.
The Firefighters also provide a free service to San Miguel Seniors to test and replace their smoke detectors. Our firefighters host an annual Halloween BBQ and candy check as well as bring Santa in a fire engine to hear the wishes of local kids in the Christmas Electric Light Parade.
The Clean-up Committee worked on a Saturday in March to rid the town of two 40 yard dumpster bins full of trash. Six tons of debris were hauled away and 1 ton of trash was recycled. The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters manned the clean up day and were joined by the new District 1 Supervisor, Frank Mecham. The bins are provided at a reduced fee by the San Miguel Garbage Co. and parked on the vacant lot north of the Fire Station.
The Clean-up is possible through volunteer labor and donations by residents who use the service to cover dump fees. There are plans to accept tires from cars and light duty trucks for a fee.  No large truck or tractor tires can be accepted. The firefighter crew offers chipping of yard prunings for a donation to pay for gas and maintenance of the chipper. Sign up for chipping at the San Miguel CSD office.
Show your appreciation for our firefighters by providing a dinner on Tuesday training nights. "Feed the Firemen" is looking for residents to supply a dinner for twelve firefighters. Call Sara at 805-467-9308 to arrange bringing dinner.

Mission Parish Hall
Construction Underway

Model of new parish hall
Model of new Mission Parish Hall and Community Center
Construction is currently underway for the new Parish Hall for Mission San Miguel.  Parishioners and local residents have been raising funds for over 10 years to build the much needed community center in the empty field that sits between the Mission and Highway 101.
During World War II, the land was home to the USO Building that served soldiers at Camp Roberts. After the war the land was set to be auctioned off by the U.S. government. The Mission friars purchased the land and used the USO Building as a Parish Hall. The aging building was later condemned and torn down, leaving the Parish and friars without a meeting hall. The Franciscan Friars Province of Santa Barbara, who saved the land from auction, donated the parcel of land back to Mission San Miguel. Brother Bill Short stated at the ceremony, "We are very pleased that the friars can make a contribution of this land for the purpose of building a parish hall, restoring it to a purpose it enjoyed for many years in the past."
Work has also started on the eagerly awaited retrofit work on the Mission's main sanctuary which has been closed since the December 2003 earthquake. Read more details about the story at the Paso Robles Press.
