Poly Students Renovate
Family Home
Cal Poly students worked in triple digit heat to renovate a home for the Larry Rueck family in San Miguel. The Rueck's left their home for a few weeks while Cal Poly students labored to improve the comfort, safety and handicap accessibility of their home, as part of the Poly House program. On Sunday, May 17th, the students gathered to "unveil" the renovated house to the Rueck family.
Larry and his wife are long-time residents of San Miguel, who care for their handicapped granddaughter. Their granddaughter was born with a heart defect and had 3 heart surgeries before the age of 3. Larry is a San Miguel Volunteer Firefighter and owns the Rueck Pump & Repair business downtown. Mr. and Mrs. Rueck have opened their home and hearts caring for over 20 foster children through the years.
The challenge for the students was to plan and schedule the work and resources to assure that the entire project could be completed in only four days (2nd and 3rd weekends in May) before the school quarter ends. The class receives no funding with which to perform the work for this project and depends entirely upon the generosity of businesses and individuals in the community. Thanks go to the donors who made the project possible!
Students were under the direction of Associate Professor, Roya Javadpour, Ph.D. from the Industrial & Mechanical Engineering Dept. at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo.
Welcome to San Miguel!

The San Miguel Community Services District is making good use of the new banner poles in the downtown area installed by SLO County Public Works. The CSD will rotate different message banners and they welcome local civic groups to advertise their own special events to be hoisted over Mission Street.
The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters raise the overhead banners for a small fee to help cover the cost of the special equipment required for hoisting the signs.
For more information contact the CSD office at 805-467-3388.

The Sagebrush Days parade committee would like to thank the Friends of the San Miguel Library, the San Miguel Parlor Native Sons of the Golden West, the San Miguel Fire Dept., the San Miguel Resource Connection, and the San Miguel CSD for their support of the 21st Annual Sagebrush Days Parade! Parade entries included fire engines, military vehicles, classic cars, horses and antique equipment. The Estrella Warbirds opened the parade with a flyover! Donations to the Estrella Warbird Museum in appreciation of the historic planes will be gladly accepted by the San Miguel Volunteer Fire Dept.
The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters hosted a fundraising BBQ in front of the fire station after the parade.
