Hands on Health at Cal Poly

Hands on Health
Christina Wilkinson gives presentation at Cal Poly
Christina Wilkinson and Eileen Rogers are teachers from Lillian Larsen who are very involved in the Healthy Eating, Active Living Grant (HEAL SLO). They both were part of a presentation team at the recent Hands on Health two day event at Cal Poly. Kim Pascuito is the representative from CCAN (Central Coast Ag Network), Sandra Diamond represents the No. County Farmers Market and talked about their role in tastings and providing fresh local produce to schools.
Christina talked about her ag program at the school and about the Soils to Succulent Flavors she has been teaching for the HEAL SLO grant. Eileen talked about the school's wellness policies and how the Healthy Hornets are involved in the grant . Laverne talked briefly about the San Miguel Resource Connection's role in facilitating the grant. Both teachers were well received by those in attendance. The audience was very impressed that two teachers were willing to devote so much of their time.

Join the Electric Light Parade

Fire engine brings Santa

Parade entries, craft booths, and food vendors are wanted for the 18th Annual San Miguel Electric Light Parade on Saturday, December 19th. All parade entries must be lighted with the parade starting at 5:30 pm in downtown San Miguel. The Craft Bazaar and food booths start at 2 pm next to the fire station.  Kids are invited to meet Santa at the Christmas party held at the San Miguel Fire Station immediately following the parade.
Interested parties are invited to attend the next parade planning meeting on November 23rd at 6 pm at the San Miguel Fire station. Please plan now to make this our best parade yet!
Please print out and post the parade flyer. You can register now as a parade entry or for the bazaar. Call Mary Kalvans at 805-610-6747 for more information. Turn entry forms into the San Migule CSD office. Deadline to register is Dec. 15th.
Those lining the parade route on Mission street get to enjoy seeing the parade TWICE as the entries turn around by Mission San Miguel and come back to their starting point. Ruth Elvin wrote a poem inspired by this fact called, "Twice Down Mission Street."
The parade is sponsored by Friends of the San Miguel Library, San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters, Native Sons of the Golden West, and the San Miguel Resource Connection.  More sponsors are needed and welcomed!

Weekend Gardener Final Sales

Weekend Gardener photos
Locals are encouraged to shop the final close out sale of the remaining plant and tree inventory, to show support for this lovely downtown business. All inventory is selling at 50% off for the final weekend, ending November 15th. A few fruit and shade trees are left with a large selection of perennial and succulents still available. The Weekend Gardener is open Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. See complete details on their website.
Christmas Trees will be sold on the lot to benefit the North County Humane Society, starting the day after Thanksgiving.
Owners of the Weekend Gardener have decided to close their beautiful garden oasis downtown due to recent vandalism. Pet ducks living in the gardened lot were brutally killed most likely by a large dog with the aid of someone cutting the lock on the gate.
Owner, Leila Harrington stated, "The Weekend Gardener has been struggling through the temperature extremes, but was surviving.  As you know, most of what we have accomplished at The Weekend Gardener was through hard work and love for people, the outdoors, and a beautiful garden.  In light of this horrendous experience, we have decided to close The Weekend Gardener.  It saddens me to make this decision.  I will not be having any kind of grand exit, but would like to sell off as much as our inventory as possible in the next few weeks."

Haunted Halloween

Haunted House in San Miguel
Haunted House event photos by Mike Sanders
On Halloween night a Haunted House was enjoyed by over two hundred people at the San Miguel Community Center / Lions Club. The event was FREE for all ages for family fun.
Tours of the haunted house walked through many spooky rooms with live ghosts, monsters, witches, and a "spirited" coffin.
The Game Room offered activities from Pumpkin Basketball to Face Painting. There was a Pumpkin Carving and Costume Contest as well as hot dogs and refreshments served by the San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters. The Monster Mash Dance enjoyed spooky vibes with DJ John Oliver.

Swine Flu Tips from
Twin Cities Hospital

Twin Cities Hospital
Twin Cities Hospital is prepared for flu season
The main symptoms of H1N1 flu are the same as any other type of viral flu infection – fever (usually over 100° F), chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue. Some people also have diarrhea and vomiting. If you develop flu-like symptoms, you should stay home from work or school. You can return after your fever has been gone for 24 hours without taking fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Most people are able to recover at home. You should get plenty of rest and fluids like water and juices. You can take acetamophen or ibuprofen for fever, body aches and headaches, but be sure you follow directions to ensure you aren’t taking too much. Remember that products containing aspirin should never be given to children or teenagers who have flu-like symptoms. Read detailed tips from Twin Cities Hospital.
Twin Cities Community Hospital continues to closely monitor the situation regarding H1N1 and seasonal flu outbreaks in our area. During the past several years, Twin Cities Community Hospital has developed plans to address serious illnesses that could have a significant impact on our community, including a flu outbreak. Because of this preparation, we are favorably positioned to safeguard the health and safety of our community, patients and employees.
We encourage the public to look for updates regarding H1N1 flu on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s flu Web site at www.flu.gov. For the latest updates on swine flu, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ or the California Department of Public Health’s website at www.cdph.ca.gov. Local updates for San Luis Obispo County residents are available here: www.slopublichealth.org.
If you need more information on H1N1 or would like a physician referrals please call 800-711-3463 and Twin Cities Hospital will be happy to assist you.
