| The Candlelight Tour is on Saturday, October 24th from 7 to 9 pm, at the Rios-Caledonia Adobe. The historic adobe is just off Hwy 101 across from the Mission at 700 South Mission St. Luminarias will light the path to the old adobe where historian, Wally Ohles, will tell ghost stories and tours of the old stage stop will be given by candlelight. On Halloween night a Haunted House will open at the San Miguel Community Center / Lions Club from 5 to 9 pm. The event is FREE for all ages for family fun. The Game Room will offer activities from Pumpkin Basketball to Face Painting. There will be a Pumpkin Carving and Costume Contest as well as hot dogs and refreshments offered by the San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters. Weekend Gardener Closing |

Owners of the Weekend Gardener have decided to close their beautiful garden oasis downtown due to recent vandalism. Pet ducks living in the gardened lot were brutally killed most likely by a large dog with the aid of someone cutting the lock on the gate. The strewn bodies showed clear evidence of their necks being wrung and their beaks were chewed off. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP (7867). Owner, Leila Harrington stated, "The Weekend Gardener has been struggling through the temperature extremes, but was surviving. As you know, most of what we have accomplished at The Weekend Gardener was through hard work and love for people, the outdoors, and a beautiful garden. In light of this horrendous experience, we have decided to close The Weekend Gardener. It saddens me to make this decision. I will not be having any kind of grand exit, but would like to sell off as much as our inventory as possible in the next few weeks." Locals are encouraged to shop the final close out sale of the remaining plant and tree inventory, to show support for this lovely downtown business. San Miguel made a good showing in Paso Robles at the Pioneer Day Parade with entries from the San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters, the Sagebrush Fillies, The Ranch Honkey Tonk and the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor! The parade theme was "Progress in Communication." The San Miguel Volunteer Firefighters pulled their antique fire wagon in red long johns as the "Bucket Brigade" winning the "Queen's Award." The Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor were awarded the "Best Club/Civic Float." Visiting Grand Officers from across the state came to ride with the Native Sons and Daughters with their three part entry. Richard Smithen drove his classic Hudson car carrying Native Son Grand President Gene Perry and Native Daughter Grand President Alice Forbes. Fred Thacker drove his antique tractor pulling a rustic float with riders depicting various means of communication from using flag signals, old time radio, and a switch board operator, to a modern day laptop, and cell phone. The float was followed by Dick Hoffmann driving another old-time tractor pulling a trailer full of costumed native daughters "talking it up" using various modes of communication both past and present. |

San Miguel will host its 18th Annual Electric Light Parade on Saturday, December 19th at 5:30 pm. A Christmas Bazaar, visit with Santa Claus, and BBQ are also planned. Interested parties are invited to attend the next parade planning meeting on Tuesday, October 27th at 6 pm at the San Miguel Fire station. Please plan now to make this our best parade yet! The Native Daughters of the Golden West San Miguel Parlor hosted nearly 200 ladies to honor Pioneer Day Royalty at their annual Tea at the Centennial Park in Paso Robles. San Miguel Parlor member, Dolly Bader was in attendance and celebrated her 99th birthday! The ladies drank hot tea from dainty china tea cups of all designs and shapes from the event’s long-time collection of nearly 400 tea cup sets and silver spoons. |

Mission San Miguel celebrated its 212th birthday with their annual Fiesta on September 20th. The celebration included a special outdoor Mass given by Father Tintle, a BBQ lunch, games, raffle, live music and folklorico dancing. The Mission's sanctuary has been closed for nearly six years since the San Simeon Earthquake in December 2003. Mission San Miguel has been working to raise the necessary funds to retrofit and renovate the buildings that suffered extensive damage including large cracks in the thick adobe walls. The Mission celebrated the reopening of the church's main sanctuary with a special dedication service attended by clergy from across the state on September 29th, for the Feast of St. Michael. The retrofitting portion of the repair work is finished. Another $3 to $5 million is needed to finish the full renovation project. Mission San Miguel is known for its historic murals that grace its ceiling and walls. John Fowler, project manager, stated that the ceiling murals have been restored so that the church can be used but tourists and parishioners will find repairs continuing. The Elkhorn Bar in San Miguel hosted dinner for some of the many people who have been repairing Mission San Miguel. A party of about 30 was served a feast of tender home made ribs, lemon baked chicken, and all the fixings! Games of pool, much talk and laughter filled the bar for the night. We really enjoyed sharing our time with them. The majority of the workers speak Spanish, so Father Larry Gosselin of the Mission gave a small speech giving his blessings and thanking everyone for their dedication to such a delicate endeavor. According to foreman Patrick Taylor, they worked and moved every tile and Santo with “con cariño” which means with “much love”. |
