San Miguel Ranch
Hearing on 9/10
Project developer, Brent Grizzle, makes a presentation at a San Miguel Advisory meeting in 2006.
On Thursday September 10th, the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission will consider a request by the developers of the San Miguel Ranch Project to amend the Salinas River Area Plan and the Land Use Element of the General Plan to change zoning of an agricultural parcel on the west side of Highway 101 between just north of 10th Street and Camp Roberts. San
Miguel Ranch is the fourth item on the agenda and the estimated start time
will be after the lunch break, which ends at 1:30.
The proposed San Miguel Ranch is located on 550 acres northwest of San Miguel, between the town and the Camp Roberts military base. Approximately 389 homes are proposed to be built on varying parcel sizes to include parks and trails. Visit the developer's website for design goals and a set of FAQs.
Developer Brent Grizzle has offered flexibility as to the final scope and size of the project with a reduced project alternative to reduce the developed area to 160 acres, with 390 acres to remain in active ag production. The proposed reduction is based on the “kit fox alternative” from the Draft Environmental Impact report.
The proposed development has been in process for nearly six years. The proposed final Environmental Impact Report can be read online or is available at the San Miguel Library.
If you are unable to attend the hearing, written comments can be submitted to Elizabeth Kavanaugh at the county planning department. Her fax number is (805) 781-1242 and her email address is ekavanaugh@co.slo.ca.us.
Interested parties may check the meeting on TV or online to see how the agenda is progressing.

Old Timers Picnic
Images of picnic courtesy of Mike Sanders
Over 200 people who attended the annual Old Timers Picnic enjoyed beautiful weather on August 23rd in the San Miguel Community Park. The San Miguel Lions Clubs served up chicken cooked over oak wood in the BBQ pits, beans, salad, french bread and dessert. Folks over 80 years old were fed for free as official "old timers." Ninety people over the age of 80 were served with the three oldest attendees being; Ella Adams at 103 years old, Forest Willard at 102 years old, and Harry Wolf is 100 years old.
The Pioneer Day royal court was presented honoring Ray Pesenti Sr. as Marshal and Maggie Vandergon as Queen. Also in attendance was Maggie's mother, Ella Adams, who served as Pioneer Day Queen in the late 1970's. Maggie stated that she and her mother Ella are, "the first mother daughter to have ever been queen in the seventy-nine years of Pioneer Day history."
The traditional picnic was started by local civic groups in the 1950s with the Lions Club taking on the hosting of the event in the late 1970s. The local Lions planted trees and built the shaded picnic area and BBQ pits at the park. The San Miguel Lions raise funds to provide free swimming and swimming lessons to local children as well wonderful programs such as the radio transmitter wrist bands for people with Alzheimers. The San Miguel Lions meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 7 pm at their Community Center next to the San Miguel Library and welcome new members!
