A Certified Farmers Market provides a venue for farmers to sell what they grow directly to the community. The San Miguel Resource Connection wrote grants and followed strict requirements by SLO County to bring a Farmers Market to San Miguel. The Van Horns are a local farm family, who donated use of their property for holding the market, with the desire to help fellow farmers succeed. The market hoped to improve business by moving near the County Park for shade trees and the public restroom. When the market applied to the County to close K street in front of the park on Sundays for 4 hours, they were denied.
Recently the County approved a Zoning Clearance for fruit and vegetable sales from a vehicle, 2 days a week, to open downtown. The inability to compete on equal terms has put the Farmers Market out of business.
What is the difference between the 2 venues and why can't the Farmers Market compete? Please read the comparison chart below: |

The family farm is quickly disappearing in SLO County. Farmers Market is a vital outlet for the family farmer. County regulations burden the local farmer while allowing big distributors to sell through numerous venues with minimum restrictions. A Farmers Market is community oriented, with home grown small businesses, as well as providing opportunity for non-profit groups to solicit support. Due to the severe imbalance of requirements to compete for sales, Farmers Market in San Miguel is forced to close after operating since 2004. You can still support local farmers by shopping at Farmers' Markets in neighboring communities. For a list of markets please click here. |
