    a little background on the beginning of the Work Family an its impact on San Miguel & Surrounding areas, 1887-2014. Recently honored as Sagebrush Days Pioneer Family --the Work Family

    John Robertson Work, an immigrant from the Shetland Islands, was born in 1860 and came to America in 1878. By 1887, John had purchased 160 acres in Ranchita Canyon. He also would come to own other properties in San Miguel, some of which still belong to the Work Family. In his day, John would bring his cattle to the rail station in San Miguel and purchase supplies from the town's main store--probably the site of "The Ranch" on Mission St. more...
