Fundraising Events for
Mission San Miguel

Mission San Miguel
Entry way into Mission gift shop

Old Mission San Miguel, founded in 1797 as the sixteenth in the California Mission chain, was badly damaged by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in late December 2003. Six years later, the church doors have reopened for services and to display the well-preserved murals painted at the turn of the 19th century and, to this day, remain unretouched.  Insurance did not cover all the expenses of retrofit and restoration.  Fundraisers continue to be held to reconstruct and preserve this priceless early California icon.  Three major events will be held the week of September 18-25:

  • Saturday, September 18, at 7 p.m., a concert by the New World Baroque Orchestra and Chorus will be held at Chapel Hill in Shandon.  “Bach to Broadway” will resonate throughout a moonlit evening, with refreshments and wine-tasting available on site. Ticket prices are $20 and $30.  Contact the Parish Office at 805.467.2131 or Rosemary Szbecki at 805.239.3022 for details.
  • Sunday, September 19, the 213th birthday with its annual Old Mission Fiesta and Barbecue will be held immediately following the 10:00 Mass.  Live music will entertain all, as well as dancing by local ballet folklorico group “Cachanilla”. Tickets for the BBQ, which includes salad, garlic bread, beans, salsa and a choice of beef or chicken, are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for children under 12. Desserts, snow cones and refreshments,, including beer and wine, will also be offered for sale. Games and prizes will be available for the children, as well as raffle prizes for the adults. For more info call Monica at 805-674-2968.
  • On Saturday, September 25, from 2-6 p.m., the Friends of Mission San Miguel invite all to attend the inaugural Wine Experiencia in the Mission Arcade and Inner Sacred Garden.  Over two dozen local wineries, ten local restaurants, several accomplished local artists and live entertainment will be featured throughout the event.  A silent auction and guided tours of the museum round out the day.  Tickets are $35/advance; $40 at the door.  Presale tickets are available at the Mission Gift Shop, 805.467.3256, the Parish Office, 805.467.2131 or online. - submitted by Lynne Schmitz.

Rod Rally Car Show
and Swap Meet

A Rod Rally was held Aug 27 and 28 in "the Little Town that Time Forgot". The best of show was a home-grown boy, Carl Mumford, with his 1955 Ford pickup- shiny black...it was so black you could see your whiskers in the mirror-like finish! It displayed all sorts of automatic amenities, like the automatic hood opener, the automatic door opener. Cool! -just the most beautiful pickup I have ever seen.
The show was a hoot and there was a great crowd. Over 50 cars showed up for Saturday's  "show and shine". And Friday night was cruise night: a really boss time in the old town. Rock on! And don't forget the Volunteer Fire Fighters and The Ranch for doing a great job by bringing the show to San Miguel. This is what this town is all about. Ride on! - submitted by Mike Sanders
